Somalia Traditional Clothes. Men’s Sarongs

Somalians frequently wear their traditional attire. Somalis wear traditional dress on a daily basis, in contrast to Europeans who only wear it during holidays and other special events. People only wear Western clothing on a daily basis in large cities, saving traditional attire for special occasions and events. The majority of the body is covered to protect it from the harsh heat in Somalia, and clothing is made from natural materials. In order to avoid sweating, they also dress in loose clothing—even men prefer skirt-like attire.

Somali males dress in sarong-like garments (a long piece of cloth wrapped around the waist). It is typically a white cotton fabric, although it can also be a different color. It is known as “macawiis.” Men wear similar clothing across Asia, a considerable portion of Africa, the Pacific Islands, and the Arabian Peninsula. For Africans, a Macawiis replaces a pair of pants. They believe it to be far more practical and effective.

Due to Somalia’s proximity to the Arabian Peninsula, certain apparel is shared between the two regions. For instance, Somali males dress in khameez (kamis), an ankle-length natural textile garment. The item has what appears to be lengthy sleeves on a shirt. With extremely hot climates, this clothing aids in survival. It is therefore particularly well-liked in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

Somali men cover their heads with vibrant turbans and embroidered headgear (called “koofiyad” and “taqiyah”).
